What's on your mind?

So we've been talking about things I have found on random websites and thought were interesting and applicable to our class for the last few days and now its your turn.  Go to CNN, FOX News, Yahoo, or a similar website and find a technology related article that interests you.  Be creative, it does not have to directly be about computers but has to incorporate technology in some way.  Post the link to this blog then write about why you found it interesting and how it relates to technology.  Also, include one question or thought that you are wondering about regarding the article.  You can use a similar format that I use to start our daily blogs.  After you are done this you must respond to someone's post....start off by stating their name and then share your thoughts! Have fun and find something that interests you!

I thought this article was interesting because when I think of sex slavery I think of India or Africa, not the United States. I love that famous people are using their fame for a good cause. It relates to technology because 1) They make commercials and then put them on YouTube, 2) They have a Facebook group, and 3) Their Facebook page lets people put their own face in a commercial to send to their friends.

Where do you think there are the most sex slaves? Do you think this campaign will help to put an end to sex slavery?

I chose this because I found it interesting that they would chose to include video games in a museum. The Smithsonian is usually dedicated to history and art, I'm curious as to what anyone thinks about computer games being included in their lineup.

-Latest Technology Inventions: I found this site interesting because it explains all the new technology invented in 2011 so far. What is a invention u like the most on this website?

This seemed interesting because of the use of biometrics. Biometrics seem to be being used for security more and more.

Aside from taking fingers, how do you think the wallet could be bypassed?

Jeff: I think it's great, just because it's not painted or sculpted doesn't mean it's not art.

I thought this web site was interesting because it is 5 ways your cell phone can help save you. This relates to technology because it talks about a woman being stranded and not being able to call but being able to post to twitter to get help. The website talks about getting an app to teach you how to do CPR, I was wondering if that is really a good way to learn CPR through an app?

  6. Waddup Jeff? Video games are art in my eyes. We can make video games do what ever our minds want them to do so I don't see why they shouldn't be in museums.

  7. Kolby: As someone who is a certified EMT, CPR through an app is dangerous, there is no way to replace the instruction of an actual teacher when it comes to that.

  8. Royale:

I like the vein identification, but it confuses me a little bit as to how they do that. Doesn't everybody have generally the same vein system? Isn't that what makes the coroner's job rather boring? Because everyone is generally the same inside?

  9. http://www.cnn.com/2011/TECH/mobile/04/11/verizon.contracts.mashable/index.html?hpt=P1&iref=NS1

Say goodbye to 1-year Verizon contracts: I found this article interesting because I use verison and it is technology related because it is about cell phones. It is about Verizon dropping its 1-year contracts, but keeping its 2-year and month-to-month contracts. Do you think people who use the 1-year contracts will switch over to another carrier (such as tmobile, at&t, etc..)instead?

  10. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/42442164/ns/technology_and_science-innovation/

I found this interesting because it's technology like this that changes how we approach conflicts such as the one in Libya. Not only that, with such accurate and "smart" missiles, how long until everything in the armed forces is unmanned and just a matter of programming.

One question I had while reading this story is what do they change between the lasers so that the bombs go to the right target?

    http://digitallife.today.com/_news/2011/04/07/6425061-new-tool-helps-clean-up-your-facebook-reputation

I find it interesting because in today's world, it's all too simple to find something online that was associated with a person who's trying to find that dream job. That something could be what prevents you from getting that job though. My question though is how well do these clean up programs actually clean up after a cyber faux pas? If they do their job, then I would think it's worth it, just to make sure that any mistake I made wouldn't come back to haunt me. Would it be worth the same to you? Or would you rather take your chances?

  12. http://nyconvergence.com/2010/08/stadiums-stepping-up-their-technology.html

Attending a Giants-Jets game at the New Meadowlands Stadium would allow fans to download an app to their smart phones that would allow them to watch video replays of the game, updated stats, and highlights or videos on other games being played around the league only available inside the stadium. In the next couple of years they are developing more apps that will allow fans to follow the speed of the players on the field as well as the speed of the ball. Not only can they follow their favorite players they can also pick players and have mini fantasy games against other fans in the stadium head to head.

Are these new apps going to bring more fans to games, or is the experience at home better with the HD and 3D televisions?

  13. http://www.cnn.com/2011/TECH/innovation/04/08/tropical.fish.concept.yacht/index.html

I found this interesting because it's a new way to explore the oceans and a great vacation idea. It relates to technology by the design and all the accessaries making it tropical fish friendly.

If this becomes a reality would you consider renting this yacht for a weekend getaway why or why not?

  14. http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/04/08/navy-showboats-destructive-new-laser-gun/

This link talked about a new laser gun that will allow the navy to someday launch missiles from sea. I thought this was interesting because technology has come so far, I wouldn't have thought this was possible. I am wondering how much of an advantage it would give us over others.

[ARTICLE IS HALF WAY DOWN PAGE]

FOX is testing two new types of cameras for MLB Coverage. The first is a helmet camera that the umpire would wear. This would provide a whole new POV to the ballgame. The second would be a cable driven camera that would fly across the field of play. These advances in technology are helping to bring new viewing experiences and immersion to those who watch MLB.

When putting cable driven cameras in the field of play, one must wonder what possible problems could they cause?

  16. I think the 'walking house' Royale mentioned is awesome, I kind of wonder how far THAT's going to go and reading what Jeff wrote about, I really don't know what to think.

Anyway, I found two things I think are extremely interesting. The Wave motor: http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2011/04/madrigal-wave-motors/

    and duct tape x-rays: http://www.technewsworld.com/story/64917.html?wlc=1302530747

I think that the 1 year contract plan is a great idea. I have alltel and never had the chance to have this deal. One year deals are better not only do you get a new phone every year, but if you don't like your provider you can always switch to something new. I believe Verizon should still have a year contract for the consumer.

  18. This ones for G-Money: I don't think this will bring more fans to the game because you can get all these replays and stats right on your t.v. at home. Also lets face it, the beverages are much cheaper at home.

    http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/04/06/real-retinas-grown-lab-hold-eye-transplant-promise/
This article talked about scientists in Japan making retinas for the eye. The retinas are grown in a petri dish and contain the 7 different cell types and 6 layers like found in the actual retina. They have successfully grown mice retinas and are working on humans. It took about 20 or so days to grow the mouse retina. The human retinas take much longer. I am wondering how long it takes? The next step is to plant them in the mouse eye and find out if it can still see. They think they will be successful and people will have an endless supply of retinas in the near future.

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20110411/wr_nm/us_technology_app_meals
On this web site they talked about a new app that records the amount of calories in a food item by simply taking a picture of it. A fitness social network brought about this app. There are over 500,000 food items in the database that is searched for every snap shot. It also includes vitamines, proteins, and fats in the food. There is also a calorie counting process in the app. It is like a "meal diary" so people are more aware of what they are consuming. I am wondering how accurate it is and how it can tell the size of the portion?

  20. Dani- I thought this was interesting, it definitely doesn't look like any boat I have ever seen. I think if I had the chance to go on one I would.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Well MAD MAX: One major problem could be the cameras getting hit by the ball because of the speed that the ball has coming off of the bat the camera might not have time to get out of the way. How are they going to fly them off of the ground?

  22. Regina: I think that this is one of the best ways I have heard were a star has used their talents to make something known. I think that there are more slaves in the stronger nations such as the U.S., Britain, and even France. I don't think it will end the sex slave trade, but I do think it will help to reduce the ability for those people to abduct children and get them into the sex trade. It's a harsh reality that many don't like to think about so it could be one of those things that a person looks at and then tries to ignore.

  23. Kolby:
This article was interesting. It made me think twice about having twitter considering it saved a woman's life. I think learning CPR hands on would be your best option, but learning CPR through an app could be a good way and easy to learn. It'd also be nice to have to app incase you need to use cpr you could go through the steps on your app while giving a person cpr.

  24. @Jeff- While I think video games can be considered an art, I think that one of the most popular museums adding this to their collection is a hard decision. While it is art, are games worthy of being held next to such a heavy hitting line up as the Smithsonian?

  25. http://nation.foxnews.com/culture/2011/04/09/navy-shows-powerful-new-laser-weapon

I thought this was article was interesting becuase the U.S. Navy just tested its first high-powered laser from a Navy ship against a small boat with success, from miles away. Continued success will mean we might not only see lasers on boats, but they will be taken to the front lines as well. What could this mean for the future of warefare? And how could lasers improve our daily lives?

@Jeff: That's interesting. Some computer games could be considered a form of art.

  26. http://ilektrojohn.github.com/creepy/ This is something that i thing is kind of creepy, a computer program named creepy, demonstrates how easily the location data in photos can abe surfaced and plotted on maps. Various apps have popped up that let users selectively strike sensitive data from pictures. Alternatively, smartphone owners can disable location tagging in their phone's settings panel. Anchorfree, a security-software firm, is planning to offerr a feature in the next six months that can automatically remove GPS data from photos before they're sent over the Web. Would you like your face to be the new digital fingerprint?

  27. Dani-
i think the yacht is a cool new way to vacation.iIt mimics a lot of the natural surroundings and could make the trip more relaxing and enjoyable. If it is eco friendly it would add to the uniqueness of the boat.

  28. Siera- I'm skeptical about the calorie counting abilities of the app. A simple picture will not show us the right information. Foods are prepared differently all of the time. Real calorie counters should probably stay away, but those who want a general idea of their caloric intake might want to give it a go.

  29. http://www.cnn.com/2011/TECH/innovation/04/08/tropical.fish.concept.yacht/index.html

what i found is a new yacht design inspired by tropical fish. i found this interesting because if you first look at the picture of the yacht you do not think that it is a boat at all it almost looks like artwork. while i was reading about this and looking at the picture i was wondering how it would hold up against rough seas if it ever got caught in a storm, because it does not look very stable.

  30. I found live tv interesting because I feel its true we as people are turning more towards the internet and less towards cable. Live tv uses the tablets and other types of computers to stream tv. Im surprised at how much television we watch as Americans.

  31. Kolby- I think that is a good idea if your phone could help you if your in trouble if there was like an emergency feature that they could make where it works no matter where you are so they could locate you and help you.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Kolby-
I think that those apps would be handy in a time of need. If someone doesn't know how to do CPR, I think it is better if they have an option of trying to give it than not helping at all in an emergency situation. However, not being certified, they could hurt the person. I also agree that a person should not be able to be certified off of a digital app. They need the hands on experiance to be fully aware of how those situations happen and how to do correct procedures.

You have to also look at the equipment too they wouldn’t want to break that. But the view of an umpire would be amazing.

I found this interesting because the Flip Video quickly became easy to use. A signature feature, since copied by many other manufacturers, was a USB connector that flipped out of the case, letting the user connect the camera directly to a computer. The camera even contained video-editing software that fired up on the computer.
