Eyes on the road, hands on the wheel?

This is something your parents and driver ed teachers have been telling you for years but are you really taking their advice?  Read the following article about how car manufacturers are trying to keep up with the latest trends in technology.  Do you you think this is a good idea?  What are some of the pros and cons to their new ideas and integrated car technology?  What does your vehicle currently have factory installed and what other technology do you regularly use that is not "part" of your car?

  1. Yes and No. Apps that read texts out loud might be helpful, but are still distracting, and I don't even know why someone would want to update their facebook while driving.

I have no car, so I can't answer the last question.

  2. OK this has good and bad written all over it. Unlocking you car with your phone, good idea. accessing facebook while driving? bad idea. Seriously with all the accidents caused by driving and talking on your cell phone, and even texting, how can car manufactures not see that this is a disaster in the making.

  3. I think it's a good idea. I know I play with my phone when I drive and since I listen to my ipod, I play with that too. It would be good because people can do all the things they would normally do in a car, without having to take their eyes off the road. But some people can't multitask as well as others so this may be more dangerous.
My bug only has the radio already installed. So I use my phone, ipod, and gps named Phyllis in my car. It also had a CD player... but that died before I got my car.

  4. I think that being able to get apps through your car would be fun especially for online radio. I feel that acessing facebook would be sort of dangerous because the driver would have to look down and read the stuff on the screen. Having text messages read out loud can also be safer for the driver. My car is a 2006 G6 and doesn't really have any factory installed technology in it. It's not really a big of deal to me right now, but maybe in the future i will want a more tech.savy car.

  5. I don't think it's a bad idea, after all, people are going to want to check their facebook or twitter regardless of whether it is installed in their vehicle or not, so why not try to beat them at their own game? One of the pros of these integrated systems are that it would take some of the distraction away since people wouldn't have to look at a screen to find out what was said. Cons would include that drivers are still distracted, or that they could possibly become more distracted. My vehicle is a 2000 Town and Country, so it was built before all this need for technology such as integrated music, facebook tech or other such tech was "needed" in a vehicle. I do use my phone and Ipod on a regular basis but had to buy the necessary items to make it so that it was all hands-free.

  6. I can see a lot of convenience coming from this, but a lot of problems as well. Smart cars would be handy when working correctly but could be a death trap also. Anything with a 'computer' in it can get a virus and hackers WILL 'go there'.

Pretty soon, a persons phone will have their entire life on it, we're not far from that NOW, and when that happened, stolen phones could cause the loss of your car and everything else.

New innovations bring new consequences and problems with it, the main thing is to balance the benefits against the risks.

  7. I dont think this is a good idea at all. Yes this will keep driver's eyes on the road but their attention will be on the message being read to them. Which means driver's focus would be less on what's going on around them in traffic. I just listen to music while I'm driving if i can connect my music from my iphone I'll do so but if not then it's a CD playing or the radio is on. Facebook, Twitter and text messages can wait until im done driving.

  8. I don't really think this is a good idea. I thikn it is really cool though. Pros would be all the things you can do such as it reading your txts out loud or being able to use facebook. However, the cons would be how distracting having so much to do while driving and they aren't exactly necessary. My car currently does not have much, just a cd player, tape player, and radio. Technology I use that is not part of my car is mainly my ipod and cell phone.

  9. I think it is a good idea if the driver knows how to operate the system before driving. If they don't know how to operate it, it would definately be more of a distraction than a help. I think if these devices do go through the dealership should show people how to run the systems before the car is taken off the lot.

Pros: hands free texting! States are leaning toward more and more towards laws against cell phones and driving, but I believe hands free is a solution. It would be as distracting as talking to a passanger or singing along to the radio, if it works as the article states. As with the gps stuff- I also think they are good thoughts- as long as they work as manufactors say they will.

Cons: Not knowing how to use it and driving, it could be a distraction, but there are many distractions today.

Overall, it is the drivers choice on how they drive, if they can't handle the technology today they should think twice before they try something new, but I also think most people can drive and talk at the same time.

I think the app idea is a good solution. I think the governement will like the new idea better than how cell phones and driving are being juggled now.

My car has a cd player and that is about as technical as it gets. I do use it and sometimes an fm transmitter that hooks up to my phone or zune for music.

  10. Some of the features seem cool, but could be a serious driving hazard for people that can't multi-task well. Having access to Facebook while driving seems rather dangerous. Ideas like the app that allows you to lock and unlock your car from you smart phone would be rather convienient, but it raises the question of how tech heavy are these new vehicles that are being designed. With built in wireless connections and all this new gear, could a someone hack into tour car?

  11. I thing that its cool to have these high tech cars in someways, like when its comes to using your cell phone, that part is great for using high tech, or telling your car that you need to go here or there and it finds and tell you the way and how to get there. Im not so sure about letting cars park them self or driving them self. I really don't think i could handle that part of high tech.

  12. Yes and no. having the car parallel park for you is nice, when the car tells you its low on fuel. Facebook twitter are not good ideas. Gps is not part of my car. I have a cassette in my car it is a 98.

  13. I dont think its safe but others my have a different opinion. For the simple fact the driver main focus is to get to thier destination in a safely matter and not being focus on a text message or maybe online trying to chat. They're alot of responsibilities and consequences that comes along with this. My car doesnt have alot of up to date things i have an 2008 impala so its kind of old.

  14. I think these trends are great. Anything that keeps the drivers attention on the road is a major plus. We all know how dangerous texting while driving can be, so the systems that read your text messages aloud is a great feature. The voice command features are also a plus as they prevent you from looking down at the radio, iPod, etc.

I don't see many cons for these systems. The idea is to keep the car's tech up to date while keeping the drivers eyes on the road.

My car is from 1993 so it has a bumpin' Infinity Sound System. The only technologies that I use that aren't part of the car are my Tom-Tom and FM Transmitter for my iPod.

  15. I know that they are trying to cut down on the number of fatalities and accidents by making this hands free but I really think that is a bad idea. It is proven that our brains can only handle so many things at the same, I can't remember the exact amount but it's still proven. When we add being able to surf and all that to our steering wheel along with paying attention to how many other things that are happening I think we are asking for more problems.

The pro I supppose would be that it keeps the drivers hands and eyes on the steering wheel and road.

I currently have a stereo/CD player in my vehicle. I do have all the displays such as odometer, temperature etc. I also have PORTABLE DVD players for my children that hook on the back of the seat in front of them and have headphones. I do not have DVD players built in to my vehicle.

  16. The pros are that it would help with GPS and hands free, I think it would be handy to be able to just hook my phone into my car and go. The con is that people could be too distracted by all the technology and not pay attention to the road. My car has sirius radio that I use. I have a connector for my ipod that I use which did not come with the car.
