Advertising overload?

Everyday we as a society visit million of websites.  What we often don't notice though is all the advertisements we are viewing. Companies pay marketing agencies and websites billions of dollars a year to "get their name out there".  Go to a website you find interesting (post a link to this blog).  Look through the page and take note of the advertising.  How many ads are on the homepage? (post this in your response)  Had you ever noticed them before?  Do you use any of the products that are being promoted?

Read the following article.  Would you pay for this service?  Do you think Twitter should charge for this tracking device?  Have you ever thought about how advertising is so integrated into everything we are exposed to on a daily basis?  What is another example of this "subtle" advertising?

there are 7 ads on the homepage, I have noticed them in the past, and pretty much ignored them, tho I had never counted them before and I was surprised at how many there actually where.

I don't use twitter, even facebook is a stretch for me, so I wouldn't pay for a feature such as this. I've never put much thought into how much advertising is thrown at us at a daily basis, it's something that you kinda become numb to. Another good example of subtle advertising is the images we see on a daily basis in magazines, on the web or on walls we pass, sometimes what we think we see isn't what we actually see.

I noticed seven ads on the side that I've never seen before, and don't use any of them.

I don't think I would pay for that service because I don't really care either way for Twitter. I caved in and got a Facebook, but I don't understand the value of Twitter. I think that if they want to start charging they should do it on a case basis. Like if it's a normal person it should be significantly lower than it would for a big business. But I do think that charging later would be a good plan so that people get hooked before they have to pay for it. I actually have thought about how much advertising is in the world today. Last semester I was at U-Mary and my Comp II class was looking into social class and media, and one of the things we looked into a lot was the advertising in today's world. Another example of "subtle" advertising is in magazines. Everyone expects the ads to be there so they mostly just skip over them, but the image is in their head and unconsciously tries to guide them towards that product.

  3. http://www.maximumpc.com/ is a site that I normally visit. When I visited the site today, at 9:03 A.M., There were seven ads present: Three google ads and four BIG ads (Like visual/interactive ads). Today didn't have any thing I used particularly, but they were all familiar ads. I usually take notice of the ads right away, so I like how subtle this site is.

I believe that common users (like us) should have the free "lite" or "light" version of this device. I believe that Twitter should have more elaborate devices for different models and types of businesses, and they should charge accordingly. Advertising, to me, has spiraled out of control. Quite simply, its everywhere we look these days. On the bus, in the car, out on a walk, even on a date, these lovely Ads pop up. One major example of such a "subtle" ad are those that are in movies. these subliminal ads affect us without even consciously knowing it...How justified is something like that? Something to think about...

There are three adds being posted. I've noticed the adds before. And I don't use any of the products being promoted.

No. I'm not really sure. Not really. Another example of subtle advertising are the window posters that restaurant use to show any new meals that they are now making.

2 ads and I don't use either product.

I would not pay for the service and it shouldn't have a price. I haven't really thought about advertising. There are ads that show up based on information that is on the webpage you are loking at.

There are 5 ads on eastbays homepage. I have never noticed them before because when I go to the website I'm usually looking to buy something and not noticing the ads. I do not use any of the ads that were being promoted.

I would not pay to use this service. I do think twitter should charge for this because people will use the service regardless of what it will cost them. No, I have never thought about how advertising is an everyday thing. An example of subtle advertising would be commercials and billboards.

there was three different advertisements on the home page of fox news this morning. they had put them right next to there news story almost as if they wanted them to look like news also. They placed them so if you were reading the headlines you would head right to them and see what they were advertising. I don't ever pay attention to them see them on all different kinds of website but hardly ever click on them.

i think that twitter is trying to compete with facebook by making this devise free. will it hurt twitter in the long run? probably i definitely see them having to start charging money in the future. On everything you read online or search for there is always advertisements. thats how things like google and other search engines pay for their technology. another form of "subtle advertising" is business/companies starting fan pages on facebook and other blog sites.

There was an ad on the side that I've noticed before, but never really used.

I wouldn't pay for a tracking service. Twitter could make money for charging for the service, but giving it away for free could give them new customers. We are so exposed to advertisements that we may not even notice them at times. Another form of subtle advertising would be ads in magazines, since most people flip past them, but are still receiving the message they send.

  9. The website I choose is facebook. http://www.facebook.com/ is the home page and there are no ads on the homepage. When I log on, howeever, there are various ads along the sides of the screen.
I have noticed them before but I have never taken the time to read them on the page, let alone click on them.
I have not yet seen an ad that has been promoting a product I use.

I would not want to pay for a service if it were free on another very popular website (ex. facebook). I think in order to compete with facebook and google, already being free, twitter almost has to go with that decision also.
I think it is better for twitter if they do not charge.
Yes, I have thought about how we are exposed to advertising on a daily basis. I have done a few assignments on it. ADVERTISEMENTS ARE (almost) EVERYWHERE.
    Another example would be:
A celeb or any famous person wearing a certain brand.
Billboards or posters on buildings promoting a certain brand or item.

There are quite a few ads on this page. Everyday they are changing and they really make these ads blend into the homepage so that they really don't even look like ads.

I don't think that I would pay for this service, I don't even have twitter so it really doesn't imply to me, but I don't think they should charge for this because it might attract more customers in the long run. Advertising is everywhere, places we don't really notice. We are just so use to seeing them that they really don't have an effect on us. We expect them to be around and when they are don't pay too much attention to them.

there are 4 ads on the homepage. Just looking at a page I wouldn't notice all the ads, I had to actually look for them. No I do not use any of the products being promoted at this time.

I don't have twitter and so I wouldn't pay for this service, and don't feel that they should charge for it when facebook basically already has the "service" for free. I think the tracking device would have to be super advanced to charge people for it. I haven't put much thought into how advertising is so integrated into everything we are exposed to on a daily basis because it has always been there so it feels like I just over look it and not put much thought into it. I don't usually recognize it as advertising. Another example of "subtle" advertising would be magazine ads, they sometimes fill almost the whole magazine but and we usually don't spend much time looking at them, but we do notice them or see the pictures.

I find 4 ads on the home page for CheatCC. I noticed they were there, but I never took the time to look at them. just scrolled and click right passed them. I don't use any of the products being advertised.

No I wouldn't use this service. 1) I don't "tweet" 2) I could care less how popular my "tweets" are. I don't think they should charge for the service. CNN stated that facebook already offers pretty much the same service for free. Twitter is just another social cite that got lucky and was liked by the "blogging" community is what I'm gunna call it. I don't really stop to thing about advertising. Yeah there are plenty of times when they catch my attention, but to me a lot of advertisements are more annoying then helpful. As for the last question, I don't have an answer because I honestly have no clue.

There were only 4 advertisments on the homepage of espn. Two of them were promoting the new movie RED with Bruce Willis. The other two were showing some upcoming events that ESPN was going to be providing for its viewers. I have never noticed them before just because they are always there and I am not really looking just for them on the website of my choice. I may consider watching this movie, or the sporting events showing this week.
I don't really follow twitter or even know what it really does. I believe Twitter is trying to use some of Facebook's tactics in advertising. Many businesses look to have facebook pages because of the popularity and it costs them nothing. I think if i was a business owner paying for one tracking device would be wrong when you can just use another one for free. I believe that if I was to spend some time looking for advertisments it would amaze me with all the time and money put into them. Another example of subtle advertising would be all the tv comericals we watch in one sitting. People usually don't make the effort to change the channel when their favorite show is airing.

-There is 5 advertisements on just the homepage. I never really noticed them before, but the only one I use is facebook.

I wouldn't pay for this service. I have no real need for the idea of this tracker and to pay a possibility of hundreds of dollars a year sounds ridiculous unless you are a large company.
I think that twitter is doing the right thing by not charging, they are getting media coverage for this new device and are probably gaining popularity. If they keep it free until people are either hooked or find it useful they can later charge for their services possibly with a higher amount of users. Not only that but twitter is only monitoring their site, not all social media sites like radian6 does. Why pay twitter when you can have a better product somewhere else.
I never really pay attention to all the advertising, but once you start looking for them they are everywhere.
Another subtle advertising example could be websites such as facebook with their signature trademark. You see it everywhere.

This site is a lot cleaner then other sites and only has a few real advertisements, I don't use any of the products listed, but I plan to after learning a bit more about stocks and such.

An excellent article, I plan to do a lot of business in the future. Tracking popularity of products and services is easily something a wise business owner would be willing to pay through the nose for. Actually, I plan to send this link to my father, who is the mind behind the business ideas we are planning for the future.

On the homepage of this website i counted 5 ads. I never really noticed the ads before because this particular website trys to blend them in and make them look like they are part of the website. One of the ads that i do use from this page was Facebook.

I personally would not use this service, i don't even have a Twitter account. I think that it is smart to give out the service for free at first to let people see if they like it or to get them "hooked" as they say, because they can always charge for it later on. I never really noticed how much advertisement we are exposed to its probably because you get used to seeing it so you don't notice it. There are examples of subtle advertising everywhere i am sure that they are probably on just about every website that we go to.

I noticed 4 ads on the page. Normally I do see them, I just don't pay attention to what they are advertising.

I personally have both a Facebook and Twitter account, and have used the analytics option on Facebook. As a business owner, I love to know if my ads are being seen, as well as which ads get more attention. The Facebook ads may cost me some money to run them, but a person can choose just how long to run them, how much they are willing to pay up to, and even target consumers based on age, gender, and likes or dislikes. It most certainly helps me out when I run my ads because while you may pay to have the ad on the site, Facebook offers those free analytics so you can track your customers. I think that I might use Twitter's analytics even if it became something that was no longer free in the future. Being able to know what ads work and work the best is important.

Another form of subtle advertisment is around us everyday. Just look at your friends computers, phones, other electronic devices, a magazine, newspaper, or even those crossword puzzle books. You can't go through life without being exposed to an advertisment everywhere you look.

There were 4 ads on the homepage. I notice ads here because there always movies. Yeah I've watched some of the movies they advertised.

I don't have a Twitter account but even when I get on Facebook I dont pay really that much attention to the ads because after a while I learned how to "block them out". When I get on Facebook I have things to do so I'm not on Facebook doing nothing.

  19. I seen at least 4 ads. But i honestly dont think i would pay for this service for the simple fact i believe its useless. But for twitter i believe the company wouldnt charge them because twitter feeds off of advertisement and thats how they get paid. I havent really took in consideration how effective advertisements are used on a day to day basis and once you think about it it becomes useful to certain individuals not me though. As an example of a subtle, in magazines and movies. Most people expect to see those advertisement for there use only. And in movies there are hidden messages which are advertise or not looked at closely in the human eye, we usually look pasted it or over it.

I counted 10 ads. It does make sense as this is an online newspaper. I have noticed them before but I ignore them. I don't use any of the products that are advertised.

I don't think Twitter should charge for this service. I think it would be very useful for every user to get an idea of the activity within their accounts. People on Facebook are always concerned with profile views, comments, and status updates; so it makes sense that Twitter would integrate tools to better notify and help the user track their profile.

One of the things I've come to acknowledge is the subtleties of subliminal messaging in advertising. There is a plethora of ads out there that contain these messages (and most of them are sexual).

  21. Frist of all i have no idea what the hell twitter is and how to use it. I have heard of it but thats about it so. I have facebook and i haven't used that for a while until just lately, and i find that facebook to me is a great way to find lost friends and family that i haven't seen for years. As for twitter it seems to me that its alot of ads to look at if im right. I have counted 10 ads not sure if more computer is'nt working for me today on that site so.

I only noticed one add on the homepage and I didn't notice any ads previously, I haven't used the ads on this website, but I have used a few on facebook to get clothing.

If I were a business owner I would consider using twitter or facebook to advertise since there is such a wide variety of people that will see your ad. I think if they can charge for it and make money then why not, but if facebook offers something similar for free, they would probably be better off offering the service for free. I have thought about advertising a little and it is amazing how much money companies spend on getting their product out there. An example of subtle advertising is the television shows that we watch, there is a lot on tv, the actors/actresses are basically walking advertisements.

I do notice the ads sometimes, I don’t use any of the ads they have posted today ive used google chrome once or twice but I’m not fond of it.
I would all depend on how much I would use/need the service. It could but charging people would be a bad idea and may lose their followers because twitter is a big social media. I have not thought about how advertising has affected the world on a daily basis…http://inventorspot.com/articles/spot_weenie_subtle_phallus_ads_crave_attention_29625

I have noticed ads before but I honestly don't pay much attention to them. I think that we all have been exposed to them so much we overlook them most of the time.

At this time I would not pay for the service but I can see how a large company would want to. It is very important, especially in these hard times, for people AND companies to make sure they are getting the most for their money.

I do think, as I've said earlier, we are all exposed to ads too often. We do not pay attention to them anymore unless it's something we have already been looking at or something that happens to catch our eye.

I would says the "subtle" advertising isn't so subtle. You look at the youth today. They will look to their favorite singer and want their hair done that way, died that color, and the same designer jeans and Gucci bag! No wonder all these famous people get all the free stuff, if they wear/use it the rest of the country will follow!
