  1. I coped okay without the electricity over the weekend. But I really missed the lights. My parents were in Texas when it went out and my brother was at a friend's house, so it scared me when all the lights went out. I think that technology affects my life on the medium to low spectrum. I can be okay without the technology, but it sure is nice to have it around. When the power went out, I sat on the couch with 4 books and had them all read that day. When I was hungry, I found something that didn't need to be cooked until the blizzard was over and then I grilled the food I needed and boiled some water for tea. When my parents and brother got back, we played board games and sang whatever songs we could remember all the lyrics to. If I really missed technology at that time, it was only because I was alone and craved some conversation. Once my parents got home, I was totally okay because I could talk to someone. I guess I did miss my iPod too, but that's only because I need music to survive.

  3. I read in the light and slept under multiple blankets in the dark.

I like to be able to read, and the internet lets me read more than just what's in my house. I like to play videogames. I enjoy music, so I use my ipod alot. I like to watch tv. My phone is important because I can communicate with people over long distances.

  4. It was a stretch. I was using my phone a lot since I had a party that had to go in on Saturday, but other than that I bundled me and my children up and we made it as best we could. Thank goodness for my in-laws and their camping gear. A hot meal at least once a day in a situation like that helps out a lot. I kept up with what was going on through facebook as well, and was glad that a lot of people were commenting on the situation frequently.

  5. Well first off, it was taught going back to the old ice age i grew up in, i mean no computers for the kids or video games or the worst was no heat. WOW real hard on my kids the most, and me to in some ways. I did miss the TV the most, but i got so use to the computer and cell phones that it was really hard going back to the days when i grew up in with out all that technology.

  6. I managed to cope pretty well without power. It gave us some quality time to clean out the fridge. I missed my computer the most. I didn't get much school work done because of it. Technology plays a big role in my life - as well as everyone else's now as well.

  7. At first not having power while having recruits was a little hectic, plus all the snow outside meant we couldn't get anywhere. All the worries of what we're gonna eat, how we're gonna stay warm, and how we're gonna see went through our heads. We coped by setting up candles, finding flashlights, and eating dry cereal until there was help. The technology I missed the most was probably being able to cook or having our fridge and freezer cold. I didn't enjoy having all our food spoil. I never realized how significant of a role technology played in my life until we lost it. We rely so heavily on it that it also takes an event like this to bring everyone together and figure out how to get along and deal with the situation. I think our dorm became pro at card games.

  8. Being away from home at a time like this was tough. They had power the whole time so i debating many times about driving there to be warm. Without power was actually not the worse thing that could have happened to us. We still had hot water so that really saved us! Without no technology, a lot of us kids in the dorms hung out, visted, and played cards. It was good to see everyone's guard down and be friendly to one another. I never really noticed we didn't have power until i was really hungry and didn't really have any food to eat.:( Also at night when it got super cold and the dorms were actually really spooky!
I have realized that electricity plays a big role in my day to day activity. I can live without it, but it defiently makes it easier to survive.

  9. Haha, I emailed my dad and called this incident a
'China moment'. Over in China, this sort of thing happens all the time, and I think people (myself included) rely on technology WAY to much. Durring the blackout, I mostly missed my computer, I pretty much spend all my free time on it. I really missed being able to stay up after dark and do whatever; I have REALLY bad night vision, so I can't do much when its dark.

  10. I did survive the weekend, but I was very annoyed! I hated the facts that my house was freezing and we had no hot water. I missed the internet the most because I could not go on facebook and do homework that needed to get done. I also missed the heaters and stoves ect.
One good thing about the power going out was it brought people together. There was nothing to entertain us, so we had to entertain ourselves and each other. We did a lot of card playing and old school board games that we forgot how fun they actually were. I think techonology is overtaking a lot of stuff and it was good to see that for a few days with the power going off; but I was getting tired of not being able to use the lights ect and I am glad it came on when it did!
Technology playes a very significant role in my life. I am constantly using it to stay connected and do homework. I think this weekend was a wake up call to a lot of people showing how much we rely on technology. I rely on technology for everything and I would really dislike if the power goes out again. Simple things you don't think about, like stop lights, can cause choas situations.

  11. Not only was I out of power I was out of water as well. It was not fun. The technology I missed the most is the lights and recharging things. Technology is my life but I can spare a few days without it. It just sucks when you have a headace because of it.

  12. My phone was off the whole time during the blackout. Some of my buddies from vegas was out here also so i just chilled with them the whole time. I missed playing my ps3 the most. technology is not that important to me because im really a face to face type of person so i was cool with the power being out. I was just worried about eating, haha.

  13. I lost power in my house on Friday night. We stayed home for most of the day while the wind blew and the snow continued to fall. Once we figured out that it would be awhile, meaning at least a day, my brother came and picked us up from my house and brought us to my mom's house since they had a generator and at least a little heat and a way to cook hot food. I dealt with the boredom up until then by reading a book and playing with my kids, they did art projects throughout the day. At my mom's house we were able to visit and at least listen to the radio (battery run). We did not watch any TV but my lifesaver was my phone. I was able to keep up with others around town on facebook and was able to text those I am close to so I knew they were safe. I don't know what I would have done without my phone.

  14. Losing power sucked. I really did not like it one bit. At least if I was at home I would have board games to play, but here there was nothing. I missed the internet in general. Facebook, email, YouTube, I wanted to get on. Since the power was out I woke up and watched the sunrise once which was pretty enjoyable.

    How Technology Affects My Life

The weekend without power made me realize how much I take for granted. I woke up Saturday with no power and did not think twice about it, until my mom called and said she heard it would be out until Monday. My mom has a generator, so we went over there and watched a movie, after that we went out to my dads for the weekend. My dad has a fireplace, so it was safest for my Aunt Terry and I to go out there. We did not want her to get too cold and get sick so, thank God we made it out there, it got cold in our place. What I missed the most was my independence, the power being gone really did not bother me. Having to sleep on a couch and not being in the comfort of my own home bothered me! On the positive side, I got to spend a lot of time with my family and my cousin had his six month old baby there, so he kept us very entertained. I definitely take electricity for granted, looking back now it is nice appreciate all the “gadgets” that it powers! My list includes: Hair straightener, ipod dock, computer, cell phone charger & lights! Heat is also very nice because my poor fish about froze to death and would have, had I not came home quick to grab some things.
I felt bad for all of the grocery stores and people who had to throw all their refrigerated items away. We had to, but we needed to throw most of the items anyways, so it helped us along! My step mom had some shrimp in her fridge and when she cleaned it out, it was the worst smell ever!! We were all gagging! Ick, just talking about it makes my nose cringe. Technology is a huge part of our lives now and it almost scares me how dependent we are on it. If anything were to ever happen, people would go absolutely insane. We have come so far now that it makes me wonder where we will be in the future. We hear so much talk and see all these things that are supposed to make our lives easier, to me, I think all this technology can be a bad thing. The internet seems to disconnect us from others, yet open up this brand new world full of information. My dad and aunt grew up in a house with no electricity or running water, all they had was a wood-burning stove. Times were so different then, people had to work hard just to maintain every day life. Especially farm life, my dads family was poor, they had nine kids so my grandparents worked hard to provide for their family. My grandma had to heat up water on the stove for everything and wash clothing by hand(for nine kids)!! She was an amazing woman who worked very hard and taught her children well.
When my aunt tells me stories about growing up, I cannot imagine not having a furnace or electricity. I am so thankful we have technology and power to use it, I definitely took it for granted. Technology affects every aspect of my life and without it, things definitely are not the same. Everything I do in my life involves some sort of technology, which is something I have not thought about before this. Now I think I’ll go watch some television!!!

  16. During the power outage the thing i missed most was by far heat. Not having a heater made things pretty cold. Luckily we had quite a bit of food sitting around so i didn't have to worry about that! Technology plays a huge role in my life between just txting friends and family, to staying warm and having a cooked meal to eat. Technology is something i think we all take a little to much for granted
