What are you searching?

As a society we are somewhat obsessed with searching the internet for information about any topic under the sun.  Personally as soon as I am questioning something I turn to Google or Yahoo for the answer.  Things such as song lyrics, mathematic conversions, weather, the relationship status of a celeb, etc.  The options are endless.  What are three things you regularly search on the internet? Read the following article.  How many of the Top 10 have you searched this year?  Which of the Top 10 interests you the most and why?  Which is the least likely for you to search?  How do you think our instant searching habbits are changing society?  Do you think the constant and virtually instant access to information allowed by technology is a good or bad thing? Why?

  1. I usually search word spellings, questions I can't find in homework, and anyother questions I have. I will admit I do use google a lot for searching various things.
I do not think I have searched any of the top ten this year.
I don't erally know the least likely one I am to search.
I think the oil spill interests me the most beacuse I never would have guessed that being on the list, let alone be the number one searched item.
I think people are getting lazier because people don't have to look stuff up in a book or gind information it is readily at their fingertips.
I think it is good and bad, leaning toward the good side over the bad side though.
It is a good thing because of all of the information so easily accessible. it is a bad thing because of the information overload and as I mentioned earlier it does make people lazy. They are forgetting how to do steps in long division and multiplying fractions ect. because they can just google it or use a calculator.

  2. I look up song lyrics, who a certain actor in a movie is, and when another Bones episode will come on. Out of the Top 10, I've only searched for the World Cup maybe a couple times. I have/would never search for the oil spill on my own. I might have looked it up for my grandma once, but I just watched what came on TV about the spill. I think society won't really change all that much because of what we search. We're already a super shallow and superficial society, how much worse can you get? I think the constant information stream we have is a good thing. People need to be informed, and the internet helps with that.

  3. I usually search for homework answers, website url's that I can't remember, or just stuff that pops into my head.
I have not looked at any of the top 10.
    Least Likely: Justin Bieber
People are looking to the internet more and more for information, rather than going to a library.
Ultimately, it's a good thing because there is more up to date information if you find the right sources.

  4. The three major items that I search for include:
    1. how-to's
    2. computer tech
    3. music lyrics

I have not searched for any of the top ten mentioned in the article. The main search item that I thought was most interesting to take a look at was the gulf of mexico oil spill, because I would like to look more into it. As for the least likely search item for me to put in, it would have to be Justin Bieber...That kid needs to get a new job. I think our searching habits have changed dramatically, mainly because we no longer have to go to a library or a direct source to find information that is online. I think the constant ability to search for things is good. its great to have that access at your fingertips.

  5. I look up song lyrics, news articles, and movies most regularly.
From the top ten list, I probably only searched the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill, which is also the one that interest me the most just because of its eco-consequences.
I am LEAST LIKELY to search for Justin Bieber. He's a year old for goodness sakes ;P
Instant searching is a great thing to have in society. We no longer have to look through books, magazines, or encyclopedias if we want to know the answer. Instead we can instantly access it through five seconds of typing in a search term on one of the many single search engines out there.

  6. I pretty much use google anytime that I have something that I want to find out. I don't really have a top 3 because all of my searches are usually unrelated.

Of the top 10, the Oil Disaster was my most viewed. I followed it very closely throughout the event. The Oil Disaster is also the item in the top 10 that interests me the most. I don't really care about celebrities' lives so that is the least interesting to me.

I think that being able to learn something on the spot is extremely useful. Anytime you have a question about something you can look it up in seconds.

  7. I've only searched two or three of the things on the top ten list, but I am also constantly using search engines. I search a lot of different kinds of things, like 3d animation tutorials, new manga and anime titles, nerd tech, language learning sites, and exc.
I'm most interested in the gulf spill because the worlds clean water is going and going and goooiing......

  8. I havent searched anything on the top 10, nor am I likey to ever look up Justin Bieber. I usually search for things that I want to know, that I don't know the answer to. I think that using the internet is far easier than going to a library, and it gives more ease of access to people.

  9. I usually search for answers I don't know but want to know, how to spell certain words, and any other random questions I might have. I did not search any of the top ten searches of 2010. If I were to search one of the top ten I would probably search Kim Kardashian. The one that I wouldn't search would be Justin Bieber.
I think searching on the internet is causing certain people to become a little lazier when it comes to searching for information. I think using internet searches is a good thing for people because instead of using big books to research for certain information you can quickly go on the internet and have your answer in a matter of seconds.

  10. Three things I regularly search on the internet are basketball pics, spell checks and to see how my old AAU basketball team is doing this year without me. I only search 2 out of the top 10 list this year. The most interesting search of the ten is Apple's iPhone because everyone loves and wants to stay updated on the new iphone. The least likely for me to search out of Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus. I really dont think its changing society but it shows what society is focused on. The constant and virtually instant access to information allowed by technology can good but new information is always in our there.

  11. I will usually search for normal everyday questions, recipes, and spellings of words.
    I haven't search any top 10 lists.
I would have to say the oil spill, Lady Gaga, and maybe kim Kardashian. They are three topics that always have some new puzzling information.
My least likely search would have to be justin beiber, he's too young and not that interesting for me to waste my computer time on lol.
Yes, I do believe that our searching habits are changing society mostly because everyone will just pull out their phones and search google for the answer instead of spending time and researching it the old way.
I think that constant access to technology may ruin peoples social habits. If they need a question they will just look it up instead of actually taking the time and reading a newspaper about it or asking a fellow friend. But it can also be good because people can learn alot more about a certain topic or subject.

  12. Three things I often search on the internet are random questions my friends and I debate, information pertaining to homework, and how to spell words I cannot. I don't think I have searched any of the top 10. None of them interest me too much. If I had to pick one, it would probably be Kim Kardashian because we watch her reality show. Justin Bieber would be the one I'm least likely to search. I think our constant searching is changing society because we all have access to almost all information and could possibly learn from it. I feel it is a good thing, because the information is easy to find and it saves us a lot of time overall and almost all our answers are just a click away.

  13. I mostly search things like answers and pictures for homework or a question that i have and also if i am trying to find a website and do not know the website name.
I have only searched one of the things on the top ten and that is the iphone.
None of the items on the top ten really interest me because none of the topics are interesting they are mostly just people.
The least likely thing that i would search would have to be either Justin bieber or miley cyrus.
I feel that it having instant access to information is both good and bad. But for that most part it is good because people are able to find answers or information about things in seconds. It can be bad because since there is so much info out there not all of it is true and a lot of people think that just because it is on the internet it means that it is true.

  14. The 3 things I search for the most on the internet would be: Results to a game I missed, questions on homework, and random questions that come up in a conversation I'm having.
I searched for both the World Cup and the oil spill last year. The World Cup interests me the most because I'm a soccer fan and keep up with club teams as much as I can. Least likely is probably Justin Bieber.
I think that our instant search habits are helpful, they can aid you in so many ways, and also can expand your knowledge.
I think it's more good than it is bad to have instant access to information, because it saves you time, money and can help you in many ways.

  15. I usually look up sports related stuff when I am searching for anything. Google is what I use the most, my top three would have to be any kind of stats for teams and players, then places like down in Arizona where I'll be in a couple of days, and last would have to be other colleges.

I don't think that I have searched any of those top ten lately, maybe Megan Fox to see if she is single, but probably Britney Spears interests me the most off of this list because you never know what she is going to do next maybe dye her hair orange or shave her head again. I think you could get a pool together and bet on what she is going to do next.
I would have to say that I wouldn't ever search Justin Bieber because lets face it he is Canadian hahaha but I'm just not interested in his music, plus I don't think he should have won that MVP award in the Celeb basketball game.

I think our internet use is good because we can get a lot of information in a matter of seconds compared to looking in a book for it.

  16. I usually search for books, lyrics to songs I like, and now I also search for info on the TV series Supernatural.
I have never searched for any of the Top 10.
The oil spill in Mexico interests me the most. I like reading about situations that affect parts of the Earth.
And all the others are the ones I will most likely not search for.
I think that our instant search habits are making a majority of the population lazy in looking for information.
I think that the instant access to information is a good thing. It makes it easier for people to learn about different things that can affect their everyday life in either positive or negative ways. And the information is most likely, always up to date.

  17. the things I search for most would probably be spellings, questions for home work, and current news articles. I haven't searched any of the top 10 this year. The most interesting search would probably be the iPhone, because I have an interest in technology. I would probably not search for any of the celebs because I don't really care about them. Technology is giving us an instant research tool, which is good and useful, but there is always the age old question of the credibility of the source.

  18. I look up information on the universe, watch videos on youtube, and search for new information for school and my own curiosity. The only top ten item I searched was the iphone because I am thinking about buying one so I was looking up reviews on it. That is the topic that interests me the most because I really like apple products and I think the phone would be a good upgrade for me. I have an ipod touch so I think the phone will be similar to that and I love my ipod so I should like the phone. Honestly, the only one I would want looking up is the oil spill, I don't like to spend time reading about celebs. Instant searching habits have changed the way we get information, now anyone can go on the internet, type in a keyword and less than 5 seconds later have access to tons of websites (some with reliable info). I think it is good and bad because I personally love the fact I can go on google and type in anything that I want and find answers, it is so convenient. The down side could be that instead of going to an actual person who has knowledge about the information you are looking for and communicating and finding out for ourselves, we can just go type a few words and instantly have answers. I think direct communication with others is important and sources on the internet are not always correct so that is a down side in my opinion to the internet.

  19. The 3 things I search for on the internet is truck deals, where the rodeos are for the week, what is going on with are military. I don't really look to much into the top 10 sites.I look into the housing market, what songs are out there that are new, i look up songs, i look up song lyrics, relationships on dating sites, whats going on with the war, whats going on with the military, how to find deals on cars, trucks, houses, what kinds of computers are out there for sale, what the price of oil is and how many site sare big wells sites. I look up all kinds of stuff. There are a few things that I hate that I would never look into but am going to keep that to myself. Are instant searching habbits are making it alot easier to use and find old and new things no matter what they are. Its a good thing to find info in some ways like find new friends and family or old friends and family and its a bad way sometimes when you don't what someone to find ya like friends, family or the government looking for ya.

  20. i usually search on the internet for song lyrics to understand a certain song, sports/questions about my favorite athletes, and about question i dont have the answer to. But the top 10 they had i didnt use none except one because i wanted to get the apple iphone but didnt like it at the time and everyone had it. The Justin Bieber least got my attention because i dont like him like that at all not a hater just dont. But the iphone caught my attention alot because i liked the phone at one point and time. I think its a good habit it make our life a lot more easier you know

  21. Top three things I normally search on the net: song lyrics, video games walkthroughs/cheats, and video game news.

I haven't searched anything in that top 10 list. Nothing on the list interests me due to the fact that I don't like any of the things on that list.

The instant search for information has changed society by making it easier and much faster. No need to leave the comfort zone of your home to research for things. No more searching through hundreds of different books just to get bits and pieces of information. The bad part about it is though that there are so many things that can be found. Anyone can put something on the internet and not everything on the internet is true.

  22. I have not looked for any of the ten things that were the top searched. They seem to be mostly about celebrities. Maybe I'm older than I think but I honestly don't search google all the much. Most likely I will ask a friend or family member first and they will tell me to search for it online! So, to answer what I normally search I guess it would be nothing on a regular basis. I still forget many times that I have a search engine at the ready. Though I did recently look up and order something that I had heard about. I suppose you could count that, presents for people or myself.
If I had to pick which one would interest me the most about the top ten list I would say the oil spill just because it's so sickening how much was spilled and with us being so much about oil and everyone in my family and pretty much friends too having something to do with oil.
The technology available could be good or bad. I do think there is too much info available right now. If you look up a real estate agency, I won't name it here, on a search engine you can actually find a family Christmas letter expressing personal details. It is available, with a picture of the family, for all to see. That is scary. I think people self diagnose too much and cause a hardship for our doctors and wait times because now the doctor is either having to run extra tests or having to explain why it's not this or that. But, it's nice to be able to find the answer to minor questions quickly and easily.
