People used to think it was amazing if you had a phone at your house...

And now its not unusual to find a 10 year old with their own cell phone.  Things we think are common parts of everyday life were once some sci-fi dream that people thought would never happen. Here is a few things that today we might think are bizzare but might be common place at your 20 year high school reunion.  Which do you think is most likely to become a reality? Why?  Choose three of the inventions and discuss how you think they will affect society.  What will they replace? How will the aid people? How will the hinder our current way of life?

  1. Well, quite honestly, a few of these "possibilities" have actually already become a reality. I believe they are not at the standards we want, but are just the beginning. For example, we have robots that make peoples' lives easier. A simple example would be the iRobot. that is a helpful robot that cleans your floors! I believe that the first thing to become a reality on this list is bringing back extinct animals. With how fast we understand the DNA structure and with technology helping us along the way, its only a matter of time, or luck.

Internet in the eyes: I think this concept of "internet in the eyes" will greatly affect our lives. We will be replacing so many businesses, jobs, and more. For better or for worse, I cannot tell. These devices will replace many appliances in our home. I could see this helping us in this scenario: Imagine a person who is in trouble or dying. By looking at them with your "internet" concept, you can tell what is wrong with the person, diagnose the best treatment under the circumstances, and prevent possible death.

Augmented and virtual reality: This idea will change the way people train, entertain, and use their brain. Imagine soldiers training virtually and having an optimal advantage, or a surgeon using a virtual scenario to learn how to understand a type of surgery.

Bringing back extinct animals: As exciting as this may sound, this could be a potentially dangerous idea. bringing back certain species or animals could shift the food chain, possibly causing a loss of control. Bringing back an animal from a different era also poses the risk of new diseases and the animal not being able to adjust to this new age. A dangerous tool, to be sure.

  2. I would say longer lifespan is most likely, followed by robots. Medical science is becoming more refined each day, along with robotics.

Virtual Reality: People would probably spend a lot more time playing games, though the technology could very well be used for business meetings.

Extinct Animals: A lot of the animals probably couldn't function in today's Earth. They are used to a climate that hasn't been around for a while.

Shape Shifting: If the technology ever exists, furniture shopping would have a sharp downturn. You would have to worry about people hacking your chair, however.

  3. It is interesting the way technologies going, especially with communication. In a recent paper, I quoted Nicola Tesla, who in an interview said

,"When wireless is perfectly applied the whole earth will be converted into a huge brain, which in fact it is, all things being particles of a real and rhythmic whole. We shall be able to communicate with one another instantly, irrespective of distance. Not only this, but through television and telephony we shall see and hear one another as perfectly as though we were face to face, despite intervening distances of thousands of miles; and the instruments through which we shall be able to do his will be amazingly simple compared with our present telephone. A man will be able to carry one in his vest pocket...."

It's kind of scary that a guy who died almost 70 years ago is talking about a iphone.

  4. hmm the three that seem almost upon us are shape shifting, bringing back extinct animals and extending life.

shape shifting will replace the need to make specific items, why make only a chair or table when you can make both into one. this would impact some of the need for specific crafters but could also help cut back on wasted material.

bringing back extinct animals could help us better understand our history, but it could have dire consequences. like Ryan said, it could have unforeseen problems, like diseases that were extiinct as well as the said animals not being able to cope with a new environment.

as to extending life, this could have both positive and negative side effects. on one hand it would make the quality of life easier to obtain, and would make it easier to fix health problems that would normally require huge amounts of time. But if someone knew that an ailment could be fixed easier, it would lead to more extremes of carelessness.

  5. I think the internet in your eye is super cool and also the most doable. And that's just because the idea of it doesn't freak me out quite yet.

Extinct animals: Sure, seeing a real life T-rex would be cool... but not cool enough for me to wish it had happened. Although, how would Dino Steaks taste? No, that's not even enough for me to be okay with bringing back extinct animals. For one. They're extinct! Dead. Why can't we just leave them that way? I do not like the idea of messing around with life and death at all.

Shape shifting. That would be altogether fun. You could go from having a foot rest to having a little table for your milk or laptop or something like that. The only problem is, it might make people more lazy than they already are.

Internet in your eyeball: Who needs a laptop when the internet is in your eye? Not to mention there will be no more fear of it randomly turing off because it "overheated." Plus you could look up facts while you're watching a movie, the recipe for a cake you're making, and even cheats to the game you're playing.

  6. I think the most likely to become a reality is the helpful robots. I have heard about this before and I definitely can see these being useful especially in the army. I thought the internet in your eyeballs is a neat idea, I wonder if it has any negative affects on your eyes. It would be handy to just be able to blink and be on the internet, I guess, all the technology seems to make us lazier so that is one problem. Next, I liked the Augmented and virtual reality, I think it would be neat to be able to watch a movie or play a game where you feel like you are actually in the game. The last one is the shape shifting, I don't really understand how it works, but it sounds like you can make up whatever you want. This one I could see taking a while, I think it is amazing that technology has come this far, so it wouldn't surprise me to see all of these things in the future. These items would pretty much replace everything that we have now. Technology can aid people because with all the advancements they have been able to do the impossible in the medical field. I think it could hinder us because as technology advances, it seems like people are less and less interested in nature and going out and building things themselves. Our current way of life would completely change because I think of it as the technology we have now compared to when my parents and grandparents were growing up.

  7. I would have to say that longer life spans are the most likely. We already live longer than people in the early 1900's and having already been able to grow organs and body parts on mice and rats (don't remember what article this was in) we are vastly forward in this area. It's only a matter of time before we no longer need a host body, and it can be done in a petri dish.

Robotics is one that I think would have a huge impact on society, because it would put a huge number of people in the unemployment line. Maids, butlers, even the people that work our favorite fast food joint could end up without a job. For a plus though, it could make it so that you need a basic two year degree in anything so that you can get a job, which in turn raises the amount of money you could make.

Shape shifting could have some serious negatives. If the technology were applied to anything, say a car for example, a simple hit and run could never be solved because in a blink that car is not there.

Augmented or virtual reality is possibly the most positive technology after longer life spans. Being able to create a haven, instead of simply imagining a happy place, could have lots of commonplace uses. I know that I could have definitely used something better looking and more comfortable than a hospital room to deliver my son. A person who has only seen the inside of a hospital or house due to the inability to get up and go outside could experience far away places. Uses in the military are even there, possibly allowing men and women who are overseas in a war could get some time in one of these virtual reality rooms and get a small (although virtual) vacation to boost their morale and help them to not focus on the troubles that lay outside their tent.

  8. I think the internet in your eyeball will come a reality. I think it would be very popular and a lot of people would buy it. With how technology is evolving I would expect to see it in my life time.

I also think virtual reality will become a reality. With the 3-D movies and such we have now that seems like the next step up.

I think robots will become an everyday thing like cell phones in the future. People have already made robots that do very simple tasks. As more people make them they will improve until they are like humans in many ways.

I don't know about shape shifting and brining back extinct animals being possible though... I think it's a bad idea if they do bring them back. Shape shifting would be good as a recycling source but will hit a large part of the economy.

I also don't think the life span thing is possible. People die for a reason. The earth's resources will be used up more quickly if people are living longer.

    Replacing things in society
Internet lens- will probably end up replacing computers and chips. Who would carry around a lap top over a lens that would be easily accessible at any second? They will help people by bringing easier access to the internet and cutting down on space of laptops and energy by plugging them in. They will be hard to get started though and people will have problems with them at first. This could be hindering to us, other than that, once they get off to a start I think they will be used by many people.

Virtual reality will take over some equipment in the military and army. They will also take over brochures and other paper things like maps. They will be like gps, 3-D informational movies. I think they will hinder us by having us rely on technology even more than we already do. I think they would be nice though if they could replace the gps and it would be right on your lens.

Robots. They could help in so many ways. They could hinder us though by making people very! lazy. Overall though I think the pros would weigh over the cons.

  9. Well first off the robots have been a thing that a lot of people back in the 60s and 70s would have been scared to have. When i was growing up in the 60s and 70s i never even thought about robots and cell phones, but when you seen it on TV like the old star track and other space shows we use to watch, it was cool and something i would love to have but never thought i would live to see the day it would all come true. Robots back then on the TV shows where evil and mean not friendly at all. I still have a house phone that theses days not to many people have. There is more and more technology coming true everyday. The robot is a happening thing but yet a scary thing because its taken over jobs and the life style we use to enjoy. I myself don't need a robot to do my work for me i can do it myself the old fashion way. I thing the idea of bring back extinct animals isn't a great idea either, was just thing of jurassic park, not to good. What next break back someone that has been frozen and dead for 100 years hell with that. Never like the idea of use looking for other living thinks on other planets and then bring it back here to study not a good idea either. I'm happy with what we have now like cell phones, computers, and other up date tech that to me is worth working on the most to make it better. I don't much like the idea of Robots, that i thing we can do with out.

  10. I think "Helpful Robots" will be most likely to become a reality. We have already invented robots that do simple tasks that it is only a matter of time before they become almost human.

Bringing back extinct animals: Bringing back extinct species in order to study them would be very helpful in intent for scientists, but could be inaccurate. How do we know that the animals are acting the same way in this new environment that they would millions of years ago.

Much longer life spans: Advances in technology will cause us to live longer no doubt. The problem arises in resources - With people living longer there will be less housing, less space for housing or other services, and less resources to make needed things, such as cars, medicine, etc.

Internet in your eyeballs: Being able to bring up the internet on the go would be amazing. If it could be used to make phone calls, it could replace are smartphones.

  11. i think 3 of the most interesting inventions would be:
1.internet at your eyeballs. This is would be a very helpful tool for people of all ages. Not only for school work or basic information but also for communication techniques as well. This would bring a computer to our eyes. Computers would probably be outdated by that time.
    2. Shape shifting. This would let people change simple objects to anything their minds can think of. The only thing is that stores would loose that business of selling to the consumers. This could be over used by people and mistakes could be made.
    3. making lifespans longer. This would be cool because personaly i don't think lives are long enough the way it is. Especially when illnesses are making people's lives cut short. I feel like this could help families but also create a population problem because the people dying wouldn't equal the people being born.

  12. I thing it is great to view other planets. To see other images from far away is something wonderful. Today we use technology to see not only out side the world we live on but also we can see whats under ground also. We have the technology to find ships and other objects that are to deep in waters for humans to study. Another article that is technology is diamond cutting.http://www.jamesallen.com/rss_DiamondIndustry.xml

  13. I think there will be robots, cars that drive on their on, and clones. Its more common for that to be true because of the world that we live in. Its america we're lazy and we need robots and cars that do things for us. I think its basically self-explanatory. It will cost alot but we spend money on everything else in america that really doesnt matter.

  14. I think helpful robots will most likely become a reality because we already use forms of robots already and I feel this would be the easiest one to produce since we see it in movies all the time already.
    1. Internet in your eye balls. I think this will affect society by making everyone know about everyone. I don't think people will get to personally know people as well this way and it may cut down on communication skills because they can read about them rather than speak to them. I think it could help though, because you will never forget the name of a new acquaintance and you will be able to communicate with people who speak another language.
    2. Bringing back extinct animals. I don't know if this will aid society. It may be a cool entertainment deal, but unless our society is completely ready for it I think a dinosaur may be a little more dangerous than a lion or other animal in the zoo it may replace. Society may become more familiar with the prehistoric age.
    3. Much longer life spans. I feel this would be neat, but at the same time who wants to live forever? Society will have many more people on Earth, which could cause over population. If people only age to age 30 then cruise, I feel people may not remember how old they are. An old man or woman could be 70 but look 30 and hit on an actually 30 year old which I think would be creepy. However, I feel with a longer life span people can accomplish more in their lives that would affect society in a positive way.

  15. Virtual reality I think will become a reality.it will probly replace gaming consols. It will help people understand there environment. Someone will use virtual reality wrong. Shape shifting in the tems that they use, we already see that now look at all the new furniture. Replace a lot of furniture. Keep things organized. People wont buy as much. And helpful robots I think those will be popular. Robots will replace people. Doing chores around the house to aid people. Children might never know how to clean a house.

  16. I think none of them will be here by my 10 year reunion but that's just because I have that this year. As far as for my 20 year the only one I can see really being a possibility is more advanced robotics for cleaning and helping with odd jobs.

I think shape shifting could have some good benefits for the people who purchase these products because they wouldn't have to keep a stock pile of different things because they could shift it whenever they happened to need an extra chair or a table to put platters on or whatever the case may be. I think would be a bad thing for manufacturers because they wouldn't have as much profit. People would not need to buy as many things because they would have the ability to transform what they have into what they need.
I know we all have troubles facing our mortality but I do not think that longer life spans is necessarily a good thing. I would love to see everyone live a full life and obviously want to outlive my children but the planet is becoming overcrowded as it is. Natural resources are being buzzed right through and honestly for us to be able to survive like we do we need the mortality we have or we would not have enough of anything.
I personally hate the idea of the contact lens that lets you access the internet etc. I am very cautious of what I put in my eyes and I do not want technology there. It would be a large distraction to everyday reality. People are getting more and more distracted and disconnected. I do however see how it might help those that have to multitask and need an updated software to do it.
