Scan or pat down?

Most people dread the time when they get to the front of the line at the airport security terminal?  The time when you might get searched from head to toe or you might walk through the detector and head to the coffee shop in seconds.  Read the follow article.  How would these body scans make you feel? Is this a good alternative?  What are some pros and cons? Share your thoughts!

  1. I never liked the idea of the full body scan or the pat down. It's a complete invasion of privacy, so I like the new software. I do think that maybe they should have kept the full body scan stuff for the threatening items. That way they would be able to tell what they were dealing with. Some pros are the privacy, the price, and the lack of ability to save the pictures. One con is the lack of being able to see what is abnormal. I think the pros outweigh the con so I'm perfectly happy with it.

  2. They make me feel like they would be less accurate for some reason.
I'm not sure how good of an alternative these would be, because I've never used the scanners we have now.
    Pros: Less radiation, more privacy
Cons: People don't show up, cardboard cutouts do;privacy valued over security.

  3. I don't understand what people are in an uproar about. Its not like the images were a crystal clear nude photo of them. invasion of privacy? do you cry invasion of privacy when you go to the doctor and get an x-ray? If you buy a plane ticket you know, without a shadow of a doubt, that you have to go through security, and you know that its a very good reason. there are no cons to this system in my opinion that I can see other than the ones that people make up.

  4. I believe that these body scans will be better for everyone, especially in terms of privacy. I believe that this is definitely a good alternative, as we continue to advance in technology. Pros would be more privacy, more efficient readings and so forth. As for cons, well, the only one I can think of is the fact that since they will no longer be able to "see" the body, so they won't know exactly where objects are hidden.

  5. I would not mind walking through these body scans. I've never had a problem or privacy issues walking through the old ones either though. If they prove just as safe I don't see a problem with them. I think for people who are concerned about the privacy issues, it would be a good alternative. Pros: It does not emit radiation, does not show personal details of the body, and is about the same cost as what is being used now. Cons: Not showing as detailed of a picture seems like it could miss something, which makes it seem less safe. I think it could be a good idea and if the trials go well, it will probably be used across the nation.

  6. I think that these new scanning machines will make the people feel a lot more secure. I would feel better with this machine as it only shows a figure of a person and not the real one. I don't think that I would really care because you have to get scanned either way if they pick you so its not really a big deal with me. For people that are worried about privacy these machines will make it a lot better on both the people and the security workers. I think this is a good alternative. This system might have problems because it doesn't show what the person might be carrying, its just a small box, so security might not now what to expect when they go to search the individual.

  7. I think the body scans would help ensure my privacy, I don't really like the fact that the security person can see everything. There has to be a safe and more effective way of giving travelers their privacy and ensuring security without making passengers feel violated. One con is that the guard watching the monitors cannot see the object in detail with the new software.

  8. Last time I left Las Vegas to go back to school, I had to go through the body scan and there is nothing wrong with it and its quick. I would approve going through this process at every airport because it's safer. The only problem that comes with it is that the security officer that is looking at the image might see you without your clothes on, if you have illegal item on you but if you dont then they wont be able to see anything.

  9. I think I would rather have something scan me rather than have someone pat me down. I believe this is a good alternative because it seems to be quicker and more efficient. Some pros are it is much faster than a pat down, it tells you where the questionable objects are located at on the person, and it will save people a lot of time standing in line. Some cons would be not being able to know exactly what the object that is highlighted is and people may find out a way to cover certain items up to sneak them past the scanner.

  10. For me it doesn't really matter, but I guess that the new software would be a better idea. I do think that it would be a better alternative it would protect peoples privacy but still be able to detect if someone had something hidden they weren't supposed to. The only concern that with it not being such a detailed scan it might not pick up some of the dangerous things that people are trying to hide.

  11. I think the body scans are a good idea. It eliminates the physical touching of a security guard on passengers. This would work great on people that are worried about privacy issues. They will no longer have to take multiple minutes to be patted down and embarassed in front of a large number of people. Another pro to this machine is that they are quick and efficient. It doesn't take as long as the regular style check. One more good aspect is that these machines will not emit radiation making it safer on the passengers. They instead use a small video monitor. This idea i think will make people more comfortable about flying.

  12. I think that whats safest for the passengers of the flight is most important. Your privacy should not be out weighed by the safety of not only the people on your flight but the people in the airport.
The pros of this new machine is less radiation and privacy, but the cons of not knowing exactly what your up against could be a major problem. Stop worrying about one person, and worry about the safety of the majority.

  13. No one really likes the fact that you have to get searched before boarding a plane, but its for the safety of the passengers. To me, this full body scan would be less embarassing then being patted down in public. Its cheap to set up, but like all new software it will inevitably have some minor glitches to it at first.

  14. Well, I think it will cause a little less controversy, but not being able to see the shape of the item in question diminishes security. Before, they could often see what the item was and know ho vigilant to act depending on what it was, but if you can not see what it is, you will not know how concerned you should be about it and may lead to unnecessary false positives. Personally I think security and safety trumps privacy and they should listen to whining people less.

  15. I feel that these new body scans are good. I do not feel as though that these are an invasion of privacy if they help catch terrorists before they board the plane. As for any alternatives, I've never been through one, so I would not know any. I can think of no cons with the new system.

  16. Well, honestly i think these body scans are ok for the time being. Just for the simple fact that weird things are happening in the world today such as terriest, bomb threats, and just plain old crazy people who's willing to do stupid things for the excitement that will put others in danger. Yes, its a good alternative its better than patting down because the average person are sometimes not comfortable with method you know. One con, is the touching inapproiately and etc. One pro, you dont have to pat down because of the technology scan can do for you.

  17. They would not really affect me. I was unaware the security guards could see body shape in the first place so changing now would not make me feel any different about walking through the security systems.
I do not think it is a good alternative if the machine detecting can not tell the size and shape of the object not clearing the scan. I think if the machines they are useing now can detect the size and shape it would be down grading to switch to a newer system just for privacy. Also, if the person's body shape can't be detected, if something was wrong the security member running would have no idea who they were up against.
I wonder why it matters if some security guard, you don't know, never met, and probably never will meet, sees your body shape but can't see your face? I think they are going overboard with this part of privacy issues. If the security guards can pat a person down I think body shape should not be considered invading privacy.

  18. I like the idea for these new machines. They don't allow whoever is controlling the scan down to see the person they are scanning, so it ensures privacy, and you can't see any kind of body parts on the person. Even though people may be uncomfortable with this at first, I think they will come to realize it is much more private than the prior scanning technology. Pat downs would make me feel uncomfortable, but these scanning technologies they are testing would not.
Some pros and cons of this:
Pros: More discreet, generic, quick, not having to have someone elses hands around your "personal" body parts
Cons: Might be slower, but thats is the only con I can think of.

In my opinion, I think this is a great technology that can be used to our advantage. All concerns people had about the privacy invasion and personal invasion should stop with this private technology. I am very much for it.

  19. These machines sound great. The way they are concerned about privacy is also a big plus. I would not mind walking through these one bit if it means increased security for everyone. One of the pros is that the machine does not emit radiation. Also, it does not show your body in detail.

  20. I'm a little on the fence about this subject. I understand why these machines are needed but it's hard when you are the one having your things gone through or having your body examined for threatening objects. I do feel much better having a standard body image instead of my own personal body but I have a feeling of unsteady. I can't help but think that it's below standards in a way. Like maybe it's not as up to date as it should be or maybe it's not going to catch everything. There is the obvious upside of this machine, privacy. We all work to protect our privacy and this contributes to that cause. But I think the downside would be that there seems to be a sense of confidence, for myself anyways.
