How capabale are robots?

There is a trend in society to constantly strive for an easier and more effective way to complete tasks.  Human performance is often threatened by the creation of a "robot" or machine.  Read the following article about Emily.  Do you see this as a helpful invention or is it over the top?  What do you think some of the pros and cons are to inventions similar to Emily?  List AT LEAST two other "robots" that have been created to replace human roles.

  1. I think it is over the top, I mean seriously instead of making a robot why not use a high powered boat or something? Now the pros, yes it can take up to five people at a time! That's awesome. But on the other hand what if one of the ropes break off! You're screwed then aren't you! And yes it's really fast, but it still can't save the unconscious! Google's hands-free vehicles and the self-checkout lanes at stores!

  2. I think this is a helpful invention that will hopefully save lifes. Robots like this will make people more lazy but also be resourceful for dangerous jobs that are usually a hassle. Automatic pool cleaners an vacuum's were created to replace human roles.

  3. I think thats its over the top. The pros for it that ya its faster and can carry more people at a time and the cons are that something can go wrong. Self check outs at grocery stores and places that have a self serving stations.

  4. This is over the top I think because it seems like they are trying to fix problems that are not there. Some pros are that it can swim faster then a person, and carry more people. Some cons are that it cannot save a person if they are knocked out. Some other inventions are self checkouts, and robotic vaccum cleaners.

  5. I think Emily is actually effective. Let's say a rescue ship has Emily on board and they are trying to throw out a rop for someone to latch onto while a swimmer is getting ready to rescue them. What if they threw Emily into the water and she got to that person at risk while someone could rescue them. It can't aid to every water emergency, but it can aid in a few and just a few could save lives. Robot Vaccum cleaners seem to be on the edge of ridiculous. My opinion, they are made for very lazy people. Another robot is the self check out.

  6. The only thing that bothers me is that I think alot of the robots that are being made are just giving us an excuse to be lazy and rely on technology to do everything for us. But at the same time I think in some situations EMILY would be efficient. It is faster, and can carry more people... But what if someone needed to be resusitated or was unconscious? The other robots were the self checkout, which if your in a hurry and you think you can get stuff done faster yourself then go for it! And the robotic vacume, now thats just being lazy.

  7. This is a very cool invention, and could save lives. The pros could be that its faster and it doesn't put the lifeguard in danger. The cons would be that it is not as smart as an actual human and that sense it is a machine, there could be malfunctions. Assembly lines and robtic fish are some other examples of robots performing human roles.

  10. I think having a robot would be sweet. A pro would be that people could do more things in less time. A con would be that people would get fat and lazy because they do not do anything. The new iron ma suit is one and the vaccum ones.

  11. I don't think it is a bad idea. I think that anyway to help try and save more people is a good thing. A bad thing though is that it has no human instincts. It wont be able to save an unconsious human and things could melfunction. the self-check outs. The robot vaccumes.
